Rabat - Sepp Blatter has announced that he will step down as FIFA president in the wake of recent bribery scandals that have taken the sport's governing body by surprise.

The Swiss, who has been at the helm of the powerful organization since 1998, announced there would be an extraordinary FIFA congress to elect a new president. He will stay until next president is elected between December and March.

"I will organize an extraordinary congress for a replacement for me as president," said Blatter. "I will not stand. I am now free from the constraints of an election. I will be in a position to focus on profound reforms. For many years we have called for reforms. But these are not sufficient."

"We need a limitation on mandates and terms of office. I have fought for these changes but my efforts have been counteracted," added Blatter who won a fifth consecutive term at last week’s elections in Zurich.

Domenico Scala, chairman of the FIFA Audit and Compliance Committee, said: "As the president has stated, these reforms will include fundamental changes to the way the organization is structured."

Scala added that electing a new president is likely to take place between March and December 2016.
