Rabat- Amid the terror threat alert raised by the British authorities, UK’s PM, David Cameron said that UK is moving forward to give police a temporary power to confiscate the UK’s suspected terrorists’ passports in order to stop them from traveling to zones of conflicts and returning to UK.
Addressing MPs in the house of common on Monday, UK’s PM, David Cameron said that at least 500 Britons, along with 700 French and 400 German Jihadists have traveled to fight with the Islamic State in Syria and Syria (ISIS).
“UK was looking at specific and discretionary powers to bar suspects from returning the UK,” he told MPs.
David Cameron called for a new law to grant police the power to seize a passport in case a British citizen is suspected of trying to travel to support ISIS, or trying to return to UK in order to carry out terrorist attacks.
"Passports are not an automatic right," UK’s PM. He went on to add that specific and targeted legislation” should be introduced giving police the power to seize passports with appropriate safeguards.”
According to BBC, under the new law, UK’s suspected jihadists “would be allowed to keep their British citizenship, but they would be prevented from re-entering the UK for a period of time.”
Cameron’s statements came few days, after the government raised Britain’s terror threat level to severe, the second-highest level. UK terror alert came as a response to the events in Iraq and Syria, where ISIS militants have seized a large swath of territory.
