Amazigh pageant

Sidi Ifni- Asmaa Sarah, a 19-year-old  Moroccan Amazigh, was crowned on Friday Miss Amazigh 2014 in Agadir, a Southern Moroccan city.

The Ethnic Moroccan beauty pageant contest was organized on the occasion of the Amazigh New Year. Amazigh people are the inhabitants of the areas engulfing the eastern Siwa Oasis to the Atlantic Ocean to the west as well as the Mediterranean Sea in the north to the south of the Sahara.

Ibn Zohr University of Agadir held the contest. The jury based their beauty judgment on the mastery of the ethnic language and the quality of the cultural dress.

The beauty queens had to meet the criteria in order to be crowned Miss Amazigh 2014. 10 Amazigh women, aged between 18 and 25, had been selected for the beauty pageant.

In addition to the age criterion, the candidates were required to excel at both their Tamazight language and an Amazigh language variant spoken in the Rif region, in northern Morocco. They had also to wear traditional Amazigh clothes.

A local charity association received 50 percent of the event's proceeds.

In an interview with Anadolo News Agency, newly-crowned Sarah said, “I am very happy to win the pageant and be able to help local charity organizations, especially the one that will be held next month in the Berev province of Agadir.”
