Taroudant- It seems that Christian missionaries have failed in their goal to spread Christianity in Morocco.
The Moroccan daily Al Massae reported in its Friday edition that Christian missionaries who have been active in recent years in Morocco, admitted their failure to spread what they call "the message of Christ" in the kingdom.
The reason behind this failure, according to the daily, is due to a lack of volunteers able to "Christianize" Moroccans by means of penetrating Moroccan families, especially those living in remote areas, the favorite places for missionaries.
Religious freedom is guaranteed under Moroccan law but proselytism is banned. The government vowed to take a tough line against any attempt to shake the faith of Muslims, especially since the incident of Ain Leuh in the Atlas Mountain in 2010 when the authorities expelled a group of Christians, who were running a children's home called the Village of Hope, and were accused of proselytism.
In conformity with the article 220 of the Moroccan Penal Code, a proselytizer may face "six months to three years prison and a fine of 100 to 500 Dirhams" for using the "means of seduction in order to convert " a Muslim "to another religion, either by exploiting his/her weakness or his/her needs, or using for these purposes education, health, asylums and orphanage institutions.”
