Rabat - According to the 2015 report on the State of Food Insecurity in the World released last week by Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) of the United Nations, Morocco has made remarkably rapid progress in reducing hunger.

The kingdom has attained prevalence of undernourishment (PoU) levels below 5 per cent according to the projections for 2014-2016.

"Morocco has achieved the international hunger target by halving the proportion of hungry people or bringing it under 5 per cent by 2015," the report says.

The generally low PoU indicates that, based on current trends, Morocco is close to eradicating severe food insecurity.

However, North Africa region remains exposed to potential and actual economic and political stability.

"Some [northern African] countries are heavily dependent food imports, and their limited resource base, coupled with rapid population growth, suggests that import dependence will remain a feature of the region in the future, notwithstanding efforts to increase agricultural productivity," the report states.

Some Arab countries, including Iraq and Yemen, showed high levels of food insecurity and have made slow progress towards improving this situation.

Kuwait, Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates, together with Jordan, Lebanon and Oman have attained solid levels of food security, after having brought undernourishment levels below 5 per cent.

The year 2015 marks the end of the monitoring period for the World Food Summit (WFS) and Millennium Development Goal (MDG) hunger targets.

According to the report, about 795 million people are undernourished globally, down 167 million over the last decade, and 216 million less than in 1990-92.

To curb the hunger figures, the report suggests an increase in the social protection systems in developing countries.

"Social protection directly contributes to the reduction of poverty, hunger and malnutrition by promoting income security and access to better nutrition, health care and education."
