Rabat - After serving a sentence of two years for belonging to a jihadist network, Moroccan Salafist Ouled Mohamed Omar has reportedly fled to fight alongside Daesh in Syria.
According to the Arabic Daily Akhbar Al Yaoum, Ouled Mohamed Omar, who is originally from Fnideq in the North of Morocco, was arrested in 2012 and was sentenced to two years in prison for recruiting people and sending them to Jihad abroad.
The same source said that the jihadist left the kingdom through Mohamed V airport in Casablanca with his wife last week, to join Daesh in Syria.
According to the latest official data, 1,300 Moroccans have joined the Daesh so far. 246 of them died in Syria and 40 others in Iraq. However, 156 jihadists returned to Morocco.
Last year, Moroccan police arrested a terrorist network spread across Morocco and Spain that planned to recruit women to join the jihadist Islamic State group in Iraq and Syria.
The report of the Tetouan-based North Observatory of Human Rights released in November found that religion is not the real factor that motivated jihadists to join the ranks of Daesh.
