Rabat - The police arrested a female teacher for begging last weekend in Meknes, according to the Thursday, April 9 issue of Moroccan daily Al Akhbar.
The fully veiled beggar, who was outstretching her hand for alms in the city center of Meknes, turned out to be a public school teacher who claimed she was begging because it payed better than her job.
Her strange clothes and unknown identity drew suspicions, until the police arrested the mysterious woman and took her to the police station for investigations.
To the dismay of investigators, the woman confessed that she was a public school teacher in Meknes’ city center.
The teacher justified her resort to begging as being due to her indebtedness caused by her divorce from another teacher.
She said that panhandling was the only way she had to meet her financial needs.
The act of asking people for money is, probably for all nations, a debased occupation, but it becomes worse when the person in question has a regular job that affords a decent living.
