San Francisco- The so-called Western Sahara conflict, imposed on Morocco by the Algerian regime, has been going on for more than 40 years, and oddly enough, many Moroccans do not grasp the magnitude of the Algerian regime’s scheme: to destroy everything Morocco has been able to achieve since its independence.
Many Moroccans, and Algerians, for that matter, naively believe that Algeria and Morocco should just sit down and solve their problems. It’s that easy. Unfortunately, it is not that easy. All of those who advocate a peaceful resolution do not understand that it is impossible to move forward with the current Algerian regime.
In order to sit down and try to solve the problem, all the major players in the conflict need to be present. Algerians do not see themselves a part of the conflict. They believe that financing the Polisario for the last 40 years is simply the right thing to do. As a matter of fact, one the three famous conditions that Algeria placed on Morocco in order to talk about borders is to accept Algeria’s support for the Polisario.
Simply saying that Morocco and Algeria need to solve their problems is not a feasible solution when one party is willing and the other is not. Algerians believe that Morocco should simply give up the Sahara, and the problem will be resolved. Even though this suggestion is pea-brained at best, it is still a suggestion. Some Moroccans, on social media, especially, have no suggestions. They naively believe that Morocco and Algeria will able to solve their problems if they just sit down and work things out. What should Morocco do if Algeria is not interested in sitting down?
Time and again, Morocco has asked the Algerians to turn the page and start a new beginning, and Algeria has refused. What is Morocco supposed to do when it is conflict of interest for the Algerian regime to seek truce with its neighbor? The answer should be very simple: There is not much Morocco can do except counter all attacks in the international arena.
To the Moroccans out there who believe that Algeria and Morocco can surpass their differences, Let’s hear your input. Let’s hear what Moroccan decision-makers have not tried in the past to bring about peace with the Algerian regime. Let's hear where Morocco is failing, if you think that is the case.
Just in the last few weeks, the Algerians tried everything in their power to prevent Morocco from hosting the Crans Montana Forum in Dakhla, sabotage the inter-Libyan peace talks in Morocco, and financed trips for hundreds of their agents to the World Social Forum in Tunisia to attack Moroccans and march with Polisario agents, not even taking into consideration that Tunisia has just been the victim of a terrorist attack.
To the Algerians out there, let’s hear if you are proud of your regime’s adamant resolve to defeat Morocco for no reason other than hatred and vengeance for the past. Let us know where Morocco is faulting Algeria; perhaps you would open our eyes to something we have not considered.
Let me just remind you that Houari Boumediene and Hassan II are both dead. There is no doubt that if they were still alive, the conflict would have been resolved by now. They were too smart to keep holding their people hostage to a cold war created by the East and the West, certainly not by the people of the Maghreb. They would come to terms with the fact that the only people losing this war are none other than the people of Algeria and Morocco.
