Rabat- German Chancellor Angela Merkel reiterated that Islam is part of Germany, in response to criticism raised against her from members of her party the Christian Democratic Union of Germany (CDU).
In an interview with German newspaper Hamburger Abendblatt published on Saturday, Merkel said that "there are about four million Muslims living in Germany, adding that Islamic religion courses are being taught in German schools."
Angela Merkel also said that there are university professors specializing in the field of Islamic religion, along with an annual conference on Islam organized under the auspices of the Ministry of Interior that aims to improve the integration of Muslims living in Germany.
She pointed out that all these factors prove that Islam is part of Germany.
Earlier this month, Merkel joined a Muslim community rally in the German capital to condemn the Paris attacks and send a rebuke to the country's growing anti-Islamic movement.
"Hatred, racism and extremism have no place in this country,” Merkel said in a speech. “We are a country based on democracy, tolerance and openness to the world," she said.
